Introducing “Book Bucky’s Boulder”! - Thanks to our PTA Buildings and Grounds crew (A. Barden & B. Thomas), we now have a beautiful and substantial boulder to decorate for special occasions. Similar to the many “Paint the Rock” campaigns across the country, booking allows you to paint our boulder for $30 for three days. Here is everything you need to know about this fun, new activity.
Quick Read Instructions - The calendar is broken into increments of three days, representing a booking block. The boulder can be rented for $30 per block (essentially $10 per day). Booking and payment can happen together on our PTA website. Once you book, pay, and confirm you have read the rules, you can pick your design and purchase your painting supplies. When your first block day comes, you will want to first paint solidly over the previous design and let that dry. Then begin painting your design (see paint guidelines below). Once painted and the area cleaned up, you are done! The next person will be responsible for covering your design.
Booking Blocks Explained - As you will see from the calendar, blocks are separated into three-day groupings. They are Sunday to Tuesday at 4pm, Tuesday at 4pm to Thursday at 4pm, and Thursday at 4pm to Saturday. This blocking was chosen to allow for maximum opportunity for all and a minimum of two full days of viewing before the next painter begins. By restricting repainting to not begin until 4pm, an additional full school day will pass on the day before the boulder is painted over.
Painting the Boulder - You are responsible for painting over the previous design with a base coat. We suggest you use your background color of choice as the base coat and a small paint roller provides the best coverage. Give yourself time for that base coat to dry before beginning your design. The surface is uneven, so intricate patterns will be difficult. Simple, eye-catching colors and images are recommended. You may want to bring a step stool, knee pad, or a towel to sit on while painting. In case of inclement weather, umbrellas or a pop-up tent may be needed. If you are short on time, a portable fan speeds up the drying process.
RULES - You are responsible for all painting supplies, such as paint, brushes, water cup for brush cleaning, paint tray, painting cups, drop cloth, trash bags, stencils, etc.
- Only outdoor water-based acrylic craft paint is allowed.
- NO OIL BASED PAINT is permitted. NO SPRAY PAINT or PAINT SPRAYERS of any kind are allowed.
- You are responsible for fully painting over the previous design.
- Painting on school property, besides the boulder, is prohibited.
- ALL supplies and trash must be fully cleaned up and removed from school grounds upon completion.
- Please bring appropriate tools for painting and clean-up of the area around the boulder. Please put down a drop cloth, cardboard box, or newspaper around the area when painting.
- Only the boulder’s face is allowed to be painted. Do not paint the top, sides or rear of the boulder.
All artwork must be in good taste and may not contain any inappropriate language or images. A school camera captures all activities in this area of campus, so be mindful.
Booking the boulder is a RAIN or SHINE commitment. Watch the weather and choose the best time available to paint. This is a PTA fundraiser - there are no cancellations for bad weather.
