Proposed Amendment to PTA Bylaws and Notice of Change of General Membership Meeting

3/25/2023 11:19 pm

As a result of an upcoming increase in the National PTA dues rate, an amendment to our Briarlake PTA Bylaws is proposed as follows:

Article V, Section 7: Each member of this local PTA/PTSA shall pay annual dues of $12.00 (currently $10.00) to said association. The amount of such annual dues shall include the portion payable to the Georgia PTA and the portion payable to the National PTA.

This proposed amendment will be voted on, along with the election of new PTA officers, at our next General Membership Meeting, which has been moved to April 27, 2023. The brief general membership meeting will take place immediately preceding Briarlake International Night. We hope all PTA members will plan to attend and participate. If you have questions or concerns you would like to raise before that meeting, you may direct them to briarlakepta@gmail.com.

As a PTA Board, we would like to recommend the following amendments to our Briarlake PTA Bylaws:

1) Article VI: Officers and Their Election: Section 1. The officers of this PTA/PTSA shall consist of:
one (1) president or two (2) individual co-presidents; 5 vice president(s) including VP of Staff Appreciation, VP of Fundraising, VP of Family Engagement, VP of Social Events, and VP of Diversity Equity and Inclusion; 1 secretary; and a treasurer. (Georgia PTA does not approve co-treasurers).

2) Article VI: Officers and Their Election: Section 5. Officers shall assume their official duties following the close of the school year and serve for a term of 2 years or until their successor is elected.

3) Article XIII: General Membership Meetings: Section 6. 10 members shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business in any meeting of this local PTA/PTSA.

These proposed amendments will be voted on at our next General Membership Meeting on January 11, 2023. We hope all PTA members will plan to attend and participate. If you have questions or concerns you would like to raise before that meeting, you may direct them to briarlakepta@gmail.com.

Please Join Us!

8/8/2022 1:39 am

We want to invite each of you to become a member of Briarlake PTA for the 2022-2023 school year and thank everyone who has already joined!

The motto of PTA is "Every child. One Voice."

We take this charge seriously and need your participation to help ensure that we are advocating for the success of every child. But please don't worry; joining the PTA does not require a major commitment of either time or resources (although we certainly welcome both). You can make a difference by simply becoming a member!

This year, we intend to continue to advocate for more funding for public education, policy changes that will ensure our students have full specials (including STEM), and greater transparency and collaboration at the district level. By simply paying your $10 annual dues, you can help us show strength in numbers and lend your voice to this important cause!

Additionally, your annual membership gives you a vote in our upcoming general membership meeting on August 24th, where we will elect new PTA board members and approve the annual budget.

Finally, we are applying to once again become a National PTA School of Excellence this year, so we can continue to attract the very best faculty and staff as well as new families to our Briarlake school community. Our goal is 375 PTA members this year, and we're already more than halfway there!

Please join today at Briarlakepta.org

If you are interested in gifting a membership to another Briarlake parent or accepting a gifted membership, please email briarlakepta@gmail.com.. We want to do everything we can to make sure everyone who wants to join is able to.

***

Town Hall with Principal Lewis and Regional Superintendent Trenton Arnold

6/10/2022 11:12 am

On June 9th, Briarlake PTA hosted a Town Hall with Principal Lewis and Regional Superintendent Trenton Arnold. For those Briarlake families, staff, and community members that were not able to attend, here is the link to the Zoom recording.

We ended up only recording visuals for our panelists and not Trenton Arnold or Principal Lewis. You can hear their answers clearly but we're sorry that you can't see them as they answer.

PTA Town Hall Zoom

AGENDA:

A panel of parent moderators from PTA, PAC, and Foundation will provide a very brief summary or explanation of issues raised by parents for each of the categories below and then ask some questions for responses from either Mr. Arnold, Principal Lewis, or both. Each topic will be covered for approximately 7-10 minutes followed by a conversational back-and-forth among all 5 participants in terms of questions, answers, and follow-up questions.

1) Statistics for Briarlake's teacher retention over the past 7 years, in comparison to other schools in our cluster, district, state

2) Process for collecting data about why Briarlake teachers stay or leave and evaluating and addressing patterns or problems

3) Class size and composition for next year

4) Responding to mental health problems, behavioral challenges, bullying, discipline, and school safety

5) Gifted Liaison position and other instructional support resources for teachers

6) Teacher performance evaluations and interventions

7) Principal performance evaluations and interventions, mechanisms for raising concerns or complaints about school or district leadership

8) Facilities improvements and safety concerns

9) Addressing accusations of nepotism and/or favoritism and building greater confidence in school and district leadership

Questions for the Town Hall have been prepared by PTA Board members based on questions and concerns already submitted. Any additional questions submitted here before Thursday morning may also be considered. We will leave the submission form open through Saturday, June 11th for any additional comments or follow-up questions from the Town Hall. It is unlikely that there will be time during the Town Hall for questions from individuals, but all questions or comments submitted through June 11th will be provided to Mr. Arnold. Please do not miss this opportunity to engage with our school community and district leadership in productive ways that will help our students, teachers, and school.
