STEAM AT BES

Building penguin habitats in 1st grade!  Check out the rulers, scissors and pencils in their pockets to support their Engineering process.  The students chose to wear the lab coats and are diligently working to ensure habitats are created with a roof, floor and door!  Our STEM Tech Teacher, Ms. Black requires students journal the EDM Process and refer to it often as a resource for teaching and learning.

We are excited to Document the rigorous learning to come!

READ ACROSS AMERICA

This year’s theme is “Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers”. Students, families, and the community are challenged to search for books that provide mirrors (stories that reflect their own culture and help build identity) and windows (stories that offer a view into someone else’s experience and the range of possibilities in the world).

For our school-wide celebration this year at Briarlake we are inviting students and staff to dress up in attire that represents their culture and diversity. For example: Ms. Graham, the librarian, is from a small farming community and grew up around livestock. She also grew up participating in rodeos and winning a few competitions. Ms. Graham will be dressing up in her western wear on Read Across America Day to reflect this important part of her own culture.

Note to staff/community members: Do you have a special book or story that fits this year’s Read Across America theme? If you would like to volunteer to read this book aloud to a class on March 2 or you have more questions, please contact Ms. Graham, amanda_graham@dekalbschoolsga.org.
